Roman Chic: the best of Cherry Valley Farm for just $8,000

Like Carlo Fisco's $8,000 claim of Roman Chic from the 3rd at Santa Anita Saturday. Roman Chic was 3/2 odds, and won, so the claim may have been done for racing purposes. But 5-year-old Roman Chic is out of Ceiling, a daughter of Harbor Flag. Harbor Flag produced Country Light (the 1986 Louisiana Derby winner -- I believe by disqualification?), the good Kentucky stakes winner and successful broodmare Packet (400k+ earner Great Intentions one of her horses), and Vue (dam of Spinaway winner Oath and 2-year-old champion War Pass). Ceiling hasn't been a particularly good broodmare, but she was a first-out winner as a 2-year-old at Keeneland en route to a 2 for 16 record on the track.

As you might guess from the claiming price, Roman Chic herself has been just a moderate runner. If you want to take a positive view, she was 2nd 2nd out and 4th out in Southern California as a 3-year-old. One of those races was 6 1/2 furlongs, and the other was a mile and a sixteenth. Sire Roman Ruler adds a little bit of juice (he's promising, in other words). On the downside, Roman Chic has been with Mike Mitchell for her last few starts, and hasn't exactly set the world on fire.
